One of the biggest problems I have with the anti-war movement (which I am apart of) is the manner in which they protest. At an anti-war event you always hear at least one person go on about how the money being used for the war should be going to things such as health care, education, etc. I don't disagree with this person. It's just that, well, we've pretty much lost already. The war doesn't appear to be ending until most likely the end of the decade.

I think it's time that we, the movement, move on to a cause that may actually go somewhere in the next twelve months. I pondered for hours just what that cause might be. Then it hit me like a bolt from above. Not only is this a cause worth fighting for. It's one that has a real chance at succeeding.

I propose that we push our Congressional leaders to move to suspend NASA completely until the war in Iraq is over. I want to explain that I have always been an advocate of NASA. Space exploration is, in my opinion, quite possibly the most significant achievement the human race has ever accomplished. However, it's time that the United States finally make a decision on what is important and what can be put on the back burner.

At the beginning of 2007 it was reported that NASA's budget could be roughly $500 million less than what President Bush requested. NASA's budget would be slightly higher than $16 billion. If NASA were to simply be halted until the end of the war think of how that money could be used.

Half of that money could be used for the war effort. What we have to realize as a nation is that we are not just going to pull out of Iraq tomorrow. If and when it happens it will be a long and drawn out process that will take years. Until that day comes it would be nice to ensure that our troops are given the absolute best equipment and protection to ensure that American casualties are at a minimum. An extra $8 billion every year would be more than adequate.

Takeaways
  • NASA's budget is around $16 billion

  • Half should go to education, health care, etc.

Great article. If NASA was suspended then Bush wouldn't need the war funding bill. He could just transfer all the money from the space exploration program to fund the troops. What an idiot!

Very interesting idea. Definitely some good points.

Mark Whittington: "so many things wrong with it one cannot begin to list them"? What a cop out! I don't know if it has a prayer Zac, but it is kind of ironic to spend that much on a non-war related expense when troops lack armor in some cases. Especially when the most high profile astronaut (I first spelled it astro-nut, maybe more appropriate in one case) is on trial for stalking, etc.

Gee Bob, eliminating NASA freed up lost of money to fight Terror and spend on Social Programs didn't it? Yep George, but is sure sucks that we are about to be wiped out by a big asteroid. Yeah Bob, real bummer.

Shutting NASA down for ten years would cost more than it would take to replace the lost infrastructure and human resources that make up our current space effort. It would be like stopping pouring the footers for a bridge under construction when the footers are half poured. You would have to pay later to come back and demolish the half-set footers and then to rehire, retrain and reequip the construction crew. This ranks as one of the most simplistic, poorly considered and asinine suggestions I have ever read. Far better to cut 16 billion out of the more than one trillion dollars we spend on entitlements, welfare, pork and wasteful bloated social programs every year. Many of those program are bigger than NASA and cause far more problems than they solve. NASA is less than 7/10ths of one percent of our annual budget. Cutting that is like have one of you lobes removed to reduce your total caloric burden instead of removing real fat and dead weight. It is a brain dead idea.

The proposition is one of the nuttier ones to come out of the anti war left. There are so many things wrong with it, one cannot even begin to list them.

Great article Zac. You raise some very interesting points here. However, I must disagree that shuting NASA down even for a short time would be of any help toward the war effort or getting the troops home, etc. Mr Bush already increased spending in defense significantly over his tenure, partly in response t 9/11 but more so in his quest to toor out his 'Axis of Evil'. His spending in other areas as well has crippled the bidget and in some cases the country. I agree more needs to be spent on health care and the like, but I think there are far better places than NAA to squeeze money out of the budget. All the perks the COngress gets for example.

create more tax incentives for new businesses, increase funding in automation and productivity improvements, add Bigger Tax Credits for Energy Programs that both Create and Save Energy in creative ways, and last but not least cutting Government spending across the board on all programs that are not necessary to keep our country safe and operational. Think about the HUGE amount of Government waste that is readily apparent in our Government at this very moment. If we actually really tried to cut costs, and actually worked together as a nation to come up with ways to cut costs for our Medical, Welfare, Social Security costs, we could (I think will) save Trillions of Dollars. I know my rant on this soap box will fall on many deaf ears, but I don't feel that Cutting NASA's Budget or stopping all NASA spending will be the right thing. The are a Major Innovator for our Country, and shutting down the Brain pool that is NASA will do far more harm to us than good. We simply need to suc

And as much as we all hate to admit it, we still need Oil here in the great US of A to do our daily tasks, our lives, and Business. Simply put, while I don't agree with how we put our noses in this mess, we are there and we need to finish the job. Just like we also need to step up and think outside of the box to fix our Government and all the problems that we as a nation have created. What really needs to happen first and foremost, is that we as a Nation need to start REALLY supporting our troops.. We are not really in War mode here at all.. Where are the all the hardships that we experienced as a nation in WWII? No where at all. While our sons and daughters fight for us, and really in many ways the world, we sit here and watch our TV and Drive our SUV's thinking all along that we are doing so much to help our Military. Sad. If you really want to help across the board, start by asking Congress and the President to really work on cutting taxes even more, create more tax incent

Halt NASA, and further loose any lead left in Technology, including the loss of all the Jobs that support NASA across 1000's of Companies.. Sounds like a great Plan to me. I bet the next thing you will want to do, is to set a time for withdraw of the troops so that we can advertise to our enemies that they have won and we have forgotten 9/11, just like they said that we would. Oh, Hold it, our Congress is already trying to do that. Look, we as a NATION made the decision, we did not stop our Government, we are as much to blame as our leaders. However, now that the die is cast, we need to COMPLETE the mission and bring our troops home, Victorious!. If Iraq falls apart, and there is no stable government in place, it will simply be turned into one more Country that will add to the Terrorist Groups attacking the Free World. If we loose, world markets will be affected, as Oil will move into the $100's of dollars. And as much as we all hate to admit it, we still need Oil here in the gre

You raise some interesting points. It doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

Hmm... this is a pretty interesting plan you've developed here, Zac. I like your thinking.
