How do we recognize a problem that is appropriate for doctoral research? In the simplest terms, a problem that is appropriate for doctoral research is recognized by the characteristics that address and engage in solving issues as yet unsolved. It is a basic framework for research to answer questions, examine previous research, conduct new study, interpret data, analyze, synthesize, and suggest practical outcomes in application. (Creswell 2002)

I believe that when ever you come across a problem that is not answered, broad answers should be asked to the nature of the problem and what can be done to solve it. The problem has to be specific enough so the research can be narrowed to a focus. A problem which has focus can yield answers with clarity and certainty, which makes research that may follow easier and more straightforward to plan and execute. It has been described that this concept with the comment that within the confines of good methodology across an appropriate time period, and he or she has narrowed focus enough to proceed with a problem statement.

Once these broad questions are asked, hopefully it can be narrowed down to specifics. After reviewing all other material or papers on the subject and making sure that the problem has not been addressed before, the researcher can look at what would make a decision what would be appropriate.

It goes beyond the scientific method where a hypothesis is made up and then tests are made to prove it. The dissertation should follow the format of the how and why but also of the how. The research needs to pinpoint the question and scrutinize the results. Not only does the researcher need to find the answer, but also what implications those answer might have on society or that field of study in which the study takes place. Will the research really make an impact or add to the base of knowledge are two questions that need special scrutiny.
