You can tune in to almost any late night television show, stop by any comedy connection or pick up any newspaper and you are likely to find spoken or written jokes mercilessly aimed at one single profession- lawyers. What is so unique about lawyers, so distasteful, so annoying that American comedians at all levels feel at liberty to take ceaseless potshots at them from every angle and in any setting? Looked at the other way,why is that lawyer jokes even when told by the comedian with the worst reputation and no timing at all, still receives knee slapping, tear producing laughter? Lawyer jokes have nearly become an American pastime for everyone - well except for lawyers.

1.When do you need a lawyer? Part of the reason behind the plethora of lawyer jokes is the animosity that many feel towards the legal community. The average American generally finds that they encounter lawyers only in very unpleasant circumstances. People live for years without ever having any connection with an attorney but then it comes time to write out your will, sell your house, divorce your spouse or deal with the results of an auto accident and you actually need an attorney. Attorneys aren't present for fun things like birthday parties, baseball games, or picnics in the park. There is a real negative field that seems to surround attorneys.

But what makes matters worse, when we see lawyers in these unpleasant situations we have to pay for the displeasure of the transaction. There just doesn't seem to be anything too redeeming about having an encounter with a lawyer. As they seem to only be present for bad times and cost us money, to most of us they have quickly become appropriate objects of our disdain and subjects for as many lawyer jokes as we can think of.

Takeaways
  • We have a prejudice against lawyers that allows us to make them the but of jokes.
  • Lawyers seem to speak a different language and separate themselves from the rest of us.
  • Lawyers seem to make a lot of money for a very little amount of work. We retaliate via jokes
