Are Extra-Curricular Activities a Good Idea?

Many students new to the college or university environment are hesitant to commit themselves to extra-curricular activities because they fear it will detract from the educational aspect of their college experience. Often, students are on visas or scholarships that require them to maintain a certain GPA, or are intent on achieving the highest grades possible and devote their free time to studying in pursuit of that goal. While these are valid concerns and admirable objectives, participation in extra-curricular activities has significant benefits that should not be overlooked.

For those focused on their future career, it is important to note that companies and other organizations like to see well-rounded applicants. While grades are certainly important, often the leadership roles and organizational experiences listed on a resume carry just as much weight for a potential employer. Participating in a student organization or spearheading an event on campus demonstrate management skills, and give students valuable experience that will be applicable in the workplace. If students come up with new ideas for clubs or organizations that don't currently exist, they may gather support and create their own - a feat that appears particularly impressive to potential employers.
