Buffalo Bills NFL Postseason History

Since joining the NFL in 1970 the Buffalo Bills have reached the playoffs 13 times and have represented the AFC 4 times in the Super Bowl. Here is a brief recap of each of the Bills playoff appearances as members of the NFL.

1974. The Buffalo Bills qualify for the playoffs as a Wild Card team and travel to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the playoffs. The Bills take a 7 - 3 lead in the first quarter, but the Steelers score 26 points in the second quarter and easily win the game 32 to 14.

1980. The Buffalo Bills reach the playoffs as Champions of the AFC Eastern Division. They travel to play the San Diego Chargers in the Divisional round of the playoffs. The Bills lead 14 to 3 at halftime but the Chargers score 17 second half points to win the game 20 to 14.

1981. The Buffalo Bills are a Wild Card team in 1981 and travel to play the New York Jets in the first round of the playoffs. The Bills jump out to a 24 to 0 lead but the Jets battle back to close the gap to 31 to 27. The Jets are driving toward the end zone in the closing minutes but the Bills intercept the ball at the goal line to secure the win. The Bills advance to play the Cincinnati Bengals in the Divisional round. The game takes place in Cincinnati and the two teams battle back and fourth. The score is tied at 21 in the third quarter but the Bengals score a late touchdown to win the game 28 to 21.

1988. The Buffalo Bills win the AFC Eastern Division to qualify for the playoffs. They host the Houston Oilers in the Divisional Round. The Bills win the game 17 to 10 to advance to the AFC Championship game. The Bills travel to Cincinnati to play the Bengals for the right to go to the Super Bowl. The Bengals win the game 21 to 10.

1989. The Bills win their second consecutive division title and travel to Cleveland to play the Browns in the second round. The two teams battle in a hard fought game but the Browns prevail 34 to 30. Jim Kelly of the Bills did throw four touchdown passes.
