Price Drops
The Playstation 2 finally dropped below the magical $100 price point earlier this year. It managed to sell 136 million units so far without the magical price tag. You can expect Sony to drop the price even further before finally discontinuing the system altogether. While Sony may have a ten year plan in mind with the Playstation 2, the system may lasts even longer than that.
With the Playstation 2 still having plenty of life in it, Sony would make a big mistake by dropping support.

I agree that PS2 system is still a great system and continues to perform well. If Sony was smart they would redesign the system to take advantage of the Bluetooth technology and the dualshock 3 wireless controller. When the new sony controller that will compete with the Wii's controller comes out sony will have already the system to outtake the wii. Then as consumers wanted to upgrade their systems to the PS3 they would have most of the peripherals and lower the initial cost of owning a PS3.
