TEXAS - Seventy-two children who were being cared for in an immigrant shelter, after having been caught trying to cross the United States / Mexican border, have been moved from the Texas Sheltered Care facility this week amid allegations of sexual abuse.

These children, many of whom were found attempting to cross the border alone, were sent to a shelter in Nixon, Texas, one of about 36 similar type facilities for housing children in the nation. The facility is overseen by the federal government's Office of Refugee Settlement.

In an article found on the website for the Center for Immigration Studies, approximately 100,000 illegal immigrants under the age of 18 are found attempting to cross the border each year. In that same article, it said, "...when it comes to certain illegal border crossers under the age of 18, the Department of Homeland Security is no longer responsible for enforcing immigration law." (http://www.cis.org/ articles/2004/back1304.html)

What this means is that instead of arresting the children, holding them for questioning and then deporting them back to Mexico, the children are held in facilities such as the 36 refugee centers for children mentioned earlier. It is estimated that approximately 8,000 of immigrant children found crossing the borders alone are held this way until the United States decides what to do with them. Many are deported back to Mexico, some are placed into foster care, and others are allowed to be placed with American relatives.

Youth found crossing the border with their parents are held in the county jail with their parents, but these new refugee youth detainment facilities are said not to resemble a jail at all, making the situation less traumatic for the children who are found crossing the border unaccompanied by a parent or other adult family member.

However, with the allegations by several children of sexual abuse at the facility, this particular facility has chosen to scatter the remaining children amongst the other 36 facilities in the country, terminate the employee accused of the sexual abuse, and investigate the situation more carefully.

Children Removed from Immigrant Shelter After Allegations of Sexual Abuse
Takeaways
  • The facility in Nixon Texas, one of only 36 in the country, may close permanantly.
  • The U.S. Attorney's Office has decided not to prosecute the case, handing it back to Texas.
  • There are concerns the children will be deported prior to testifying in the case.

Well love I know that it a lot of things happen in the world, but who and what can we do about it? Hell it tokes 35 years for the courts to make up their mind about babys. But it a good story.

Regardless of the situation or legal status of these children, it is just heinous for anyone to allow this sort of thing. The predators who were not prosecuted aren't going to just stop with helpless Mexican children. They'll go after any vulnerable child. The prosecutors who don't go after this should be held culpable when that happens. This shames all of us.

Stuff like this kills me. If you haven't already I suggest you read Enrique's Journey, which follows the attempts of a child to ge to the US. So sad to know that once here they still risk the same abuses. Rhonda-Most of the parents are here without their children, working to send money back home. These separations last years, and many parents do not know that their children have attempted the trip until its too late....and they come from farther than Mexico. Thanks for this article Michy

Again, the abuse of power is just revolting but not as surprising as I'd like to think.

That's terrible.

Digusting opportunists if these allegations are real. The problem is wherever there are kids and the more vulnerable they are, there are pedophiles taking that opportunity to do with them as they please :( I would like to know how parents could send their underage kids over the border in the first place. Does the dream of living in the U.S. during the times of our rights slowly being taken away really have the same appeal to foreignerss that it used to? I'm looking to get out others are dying to get in. I don't quite get it but I know places in Mexico are hell to live in also.

How terrible!

Ugh... those poor babies. How anyone can take advantage of a child in that way, I'll never know, but it seems especially bad in cases like this, where the kids have nobody to turn to.
