Surfing is becoming a more and more popular sport drawing a lot of interest from many different demographic of people. More often people are learning how to surf. In this article, we'll examine some of the equipment you'll need to get started in surfing, and enjoying this sport.

One of the first things to consider is the clothing you'll be wearing - appropriate clothing is very important. Keeping warm is one of the things you'll need to consider when choosing the appropriate wet suit. While choosing your wet suit, keep in mind the water temperature you'll be facing. Ask an expert for help if needed. Then, consider wearing "booties" to keep your feet warm. If you know you'll be spending a lot of time in the water, also consider purchasing a hood. A hood will keep your head warm, and prevent you from getting major headaches from the cold, freezing water. As well, a hood can prevent you from getting the "surfer's ear" which basically is an inner ear bone growth which develops over time because of the constant wind and cold water present in the ear. This can result in hearing loss.

Next, we have to consider the surfboard - another important aspect in surfing. There are basically two different types of surfboards - the short boards or the long boards.

Short boards are generally shorter than seven feet long, and are pointed at one end. Short boards are considered performance boards because it allows more efficiency in turning and sliding. However, they are not the easiest boards to ride on, and may take quite a lot of time, effort, and skills.

Long boards, on the other hand, are generally longer than seven feet, and have rounded tips. Long boards are normally easier to ride on, and easier to learn how. They float better on water as well, and are capable of catching the momentum of waves at an earlier time. Beginners are normally recommended to the long boards whereas short boards may be for more advanced surfers.
