Strange things go through your mind when you turn 50 years old. It's not like turning 20 and finally feeling like an adult, or turning 30 and finally having money to spend, or turning 40 and finally having accomplishments to look back at with pride. You spend a good deal of time, like two years, reflecting on your past life, wondering what you might have done differently, wondering what you want to do that you haven't ever done, and wondering what it's all about anyway. Now, that is some pretty intense soul searching. On top of all the innermost psychological feelings about your life, you also have to seriously deal with your body, your finances, your family and friends, technology, and society.

Wow, you never want to admit you now get AARP mail, but actually, they have some really good senior citizen benefits. Wait! I'm not really a senior citizen - am I? I can't get movie or restaurant discounts until I'm 63 or 65. Whew - glad that is cleared up. OK - confession: I did use my AARP card at a hotel recently to get their discount. So I am fine with being a senior citizen when it is to my advantage. But, if I am officially a senior citizen, I just wish more places would give you benefits at 50 instead of 65.

Great article. Aly it seems we have simlar issues when it came to turning "50", I'll be 51 in a few months. I did some soul searching too. Though, I didn't enjoy thinking about how short my life might be, those who are gone or where the $1,000,000 is coming from after retirement. I think we should just live each day as it comes. It will make getting older a little easier on us. Like you said, life is short, try to enjoy it to the fullest. Thanks. :D

That 'million dollars needed to retire' advice always gets to me, too. Ya, it's good for the investment companies but, truly, how many "real" people save that much? No one says when it's okay to start spending that money...at 65, 75, 85 or are we all suppose to just sign it over to our kids the day before we die?

I too have plans to participate in a commune of friends. Since I am one of the YOUNGEST, I have volunteered to take care of my elders. Great article.

Great article. Humor is essential when aging!!! Took me longer to accept 50 than any other decade -- really hard to do when the "babyboomer" (of which I am the first-'46) in me is still so alive. You'll adjust to it though -- within a year or two of having to deal with being 60! Yikes! These years are really speeding by now, lol. But then, I got my bi-focals (oops, forgot that was changed to TRI-focals) and at least I still see everything just fine now. Life is a wonderful journey! :)

I'm not there yet either. But I was still curious what I have to look forward to on down the road.

Nice article. I don't know if I will choose to turn 50-I've been 39 for so long, I just don't know if I can handle the transition. LOL

I've still got a couple of decades to go. Hopefully I can keep all of this in mind that long.
