There was a time when the idea of frozen dinners was boring and unappetizing. But the world of frozen cuisine is rapidly improving. A myriad of flavors, foods, and fun now awaits you at your local grocery's freezer. Whether you're feeding a family, or dining along, frozen entrees are a quick and easy dinner fix. Traditionally, frozen food was high in preservatives, fat and calories, and limited to basic fried foods. Flavors were subdued and even the best food all seemed bland and soggy.

Modern frozen culinary cuisine has a lot more to offer. Exotic foods are available in the convenience of your freezer for any culture. This is especially nice if you have recently moved to an area lacking in ethnic restaurants. I just moved back to a rural town in Georgia after four years of frequently the fabulous Indian restaurants in Memphis.

A quick trip to my local Ingles grocery store has a solution for my Indian food cravings. Amy's Homegrown is a fantastic organic frozen food company specializing in vegan, vegetarian and organic dishes. Even the few entrees the company makes are extremely healthy and full of flavor. Amy's Homegrown also owns the Tamarind Tree brand which makes delicious frozen Indian favorites.

Another great brand is the Taj Gourmet. Possibly my favorite Indian food brand because of the variety of dishes and high quality. Although freezing can make sauces clumpy, the dishes from Taj Gourmet always heat evenly. The sauces are usually the desired consistency after stirring.

Don't worry about your virgin American palette getting singed by India's spicy flavors - even the "hot" dishes from Taj Gourmet are relatively tame and delicious. The use of curry, cumin and ginger give Indian food its spectacular, recognizable flavor and the Taj Gourmet has perfected the use of these spices.

Thanks for the brand suggestions - I like Amy's Homegrown, but I didn't know Tamarind Tree had the same owners.
