Parents Charged with Murdering Child Via Drug Overdose

A 4-year-old girl died after overdosing on medication to treat her Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and her parent are arrested on murder charges.

Rebecca Riley lived in Massachusetts and was prescribed Clonidine (a blood pressure reducing drug) for her ADHD as well as Depakote for a suspected

Bipolar disorder her pediatrician had diagnosed her with.

The autopsy reported that the combination of the above two medications along with a cough suppressant and antihistamine are what caused her tragic death.

Her parents have been blamed as upping her dosage of the prescribed two drugs as well as giving her the other two medications to get her "out of their hair" and to improve her behavior.

The parents Carolyn and Michael Riley have been charged in their daughter's death and will likely face a prison sentence.

They say she was prescribed the medications by her doctor after being diagnosed with both ADHD and Bipolar disorder at the age of 2 ½. The same drugs have been given to their older children as well.

The amount of Clonidine in the young child's system alone was enough to cause a fatal reaction reports the medical examiner.

The two drugs prescribed to Rebecca are approved for use only in adults by the FDA but Doctors are allowed to give them to children when they believe the need exists.

Her pediatrician and psychiatrist both recommended the medication even though controversy exists regarding diagnosing children of that age with mood and behavior disorders.

Rebecca's teachers, school nurse and her therapist were interviewed by police and claim they have never seen aggression, hyperactivity or other signs of either condition in the young girl.

What the school staff did say was that the child seemed lethargic and out of it, even had to be carried places.

Prosecutors said the parents gave their daughter high doses of the drug Clonidine to keep her quiet and to get her to behave. Family and friends reported that the parents called them "happy and sleepy" drugs and have no doubt that they were used for the wrong reasons.

This is a good story about and event that is really horrible. I did a similar story that got published today but on the medication angle rather than the murder.

That's what I was wondering too Donna. I wasn't even diagnosed with ADHD until I was 12. I take Adderall right now, but I did speak to my doctor about kids taking the ADHD meds and she said unless kids are extremely aggressive and off the wall destructive they try to keep them off meds if at all possible. Even then she said she is against prescribing to kids under 10 because they might have a different reaction compared to an adult.

Please someone exlain to me how a 2 1/2 y.o. can be diagnosed with either of these conditons? Rhetorical question but informative find.

This sort of stuff scares me. It's like the people who are put in mental institutions and then suddenly need all sorts of drugs for all sorts of problems. Are the problems genetic or were they created by the situation the children are living in? When will we stop medicating as a first response to everything? I had a student like this once. The parents were neglectful at best. Both of their children received such high doses of their ADHD prescriptions that they would pass out wherever they were within a half hour. Good grief.

I don't want to jump to the defense of the parents here, but it is scary that there are parents (it seems like too many) who do use Benadryl for car rides or for other perceived convenience. I'm not sure the parents behaved differently than a certain segment of the population other than that this was a Rx med and they gave more and combined it with other meds. Unfortunately, this child died, but realize that there are too many parents who happily medicate. My daughter has never had nor ever needed an antibiotic or prescription drug, and that's pretty good because she's almost 5. I'm not condoning what the parents in this tragic case did, but our entire American culture overmedicates way too much.

Parents like this need to seek help themselves. I hate how poor innocent children suffer at the hands of parents.

these pople did not get to the psychiatrist on their own. They are poor. Other articles state that all the children had been diagnosed and then "treated" by this psychiatrist. Most likely , this is some kind of welfare payment system. And, most likely, the initial referral was made through the school system. I have seen that some medical professionals do not effectively communicate to the patients and then profess disbelief that the patients do not understand or use the drugs incorrectly. why didn't the doctor bring the family in for a recheck if she was worried about over-use. a simple blood test would have shown if there were too high of meds in the child's body (NB My VET checks out my dog every 90 days for its medicine levels due to the dog's need for medications). there wasn't good parent education here, first of all. Secondly, there is a REAL problem with schools directing parents to take their kids for psychiatrict treatment when the kid needs behavioral modification

This is awful! The parents and the prescribing doctor should be held responsible for this child's death.
