I love the show, I admit it. I've been a fan for a while and have always been amazed at Cesar's ability to calm out of control dogs. For those of you who don't know, Cesar Millan is the Dog Whisperer, which is also the name of his television show on the National Geographic Channel. After watching many episodes, I came to the conclusion that his "Power of the Pack" approach was a no-brainer. Why hadn't anyone else thought of that?

In his teachings, Cesar Millan tells us that we must become our dog's pack leader and we must be calm and assertive in doing so and that we must be good leaders to maintain our dog's trust. Not doing so can result in unwanted behaviors from the dog. He explains that dogs are more comfortable being treated as they are... dogs. This makes sense since most human's wouldn't want to be treated like a dog. Why would they feel any different?

I decided I wanted to learn more about Cesar Millan as his way with canines is fascinating to me. (I'm a big dog lover) I was surprised to learn he is a poor immigrant from Mexico who came to this country, worked hard, and through word of mouth, made a name for himself, eventually landing himself a television show. His is a fine example of word of mouth advertising as it led him some famous clients, including Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

My research got kind of side tracked when I began to run into many opposing, slanderous, and sometimes cruel statements made toward Cesar Millan online. The American Humane Association, Esquire Magazine, and Jean Donaldson are just a few who have voiced negative opinions toward Millan. One person even stated that they'd like to put a choke collar on him and tie him to a tread mill. What these people want you to believe....

1. The dogs are actually afraid of Cesar.

2. His methods are outdated.

3. His methods are abusive.

4. The dogs are not calmly submissive, they are scared submissive.

Takeaways
  • Cesar Millan was an immigrant from Mexico.
  • Cesar Millan teaches the Power of the Pack technique.
Did You Know?
Cesar Milan was an immigrant from Mexico.

PMM - You're way off base. I will itemize where you are completely wrong: "Amongst the punishmesnt he uses, he alos uses a shock collar! Modern trainers who understand behavior help their clients succeed with their pets, without punishment and pain." WRONG. A modern trainer will tell you that there are cases that require a shock collar, they just aren't common cases. Let's put this in perspective. The only time I have ever seen Cesar use a shock collar was when the dogs life was in danger. It was a cattle dog working on a farm who had a fixation on tires and wouldn't stop chasing moving vehicles. The dog had three times gotten his teeth stuck in the tires of a tractor and almost killed. There was NO way to discipline a dog like that for the owner without him stopping work and getting out of the cab of his tractor to try to discipline. The problem is, disciplining a dog has to be done within the instant the behavior happens. You can't stop a tractor, climb down, and then say "n

Ceaser is a truly great proffessional man who rehabilitaes dogs and trains the owners. I agree it is the owners that are at fault most of the time, and I have tries all things of this with my five dogs and his techniques are working. I have learnt a lot, and incidentally I am one of those people that has treated dogs as 4 legged humans and not dogfs, and has now paid for it. With Ceasers help and advice by watching his programme hear in England I have learnt and are still learning. THANK YOU CEASER I WISH YOU LIVED IN MY COUNTRY.

PMM... TALK ABOUT "GET THE EDUCATION"! LEARN HOW TO SPELL FIRST. ANYWAY, THIS WORLD IS FULL OF IGNORANT PEOPLE. CESAR BASES ALOT OF HIS TRAINING ON E N E R GY .FOR THOSE OF YOU IGNORANT PEOPLE, ENERGY IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF OUR BEING. WHEN WE ARE NEGATIVE WE ATTRACT NEGATIVITY, WHEN WE ARE POSITIVE LIFE IS A BREAZE! SHAKE THE HAND OF SOMEONE WHO IS ANGRY VS. SOMEONE WHO IS FULL OF JOY AND OBSERVE HOW YOU FEEL FROM THE INITIAL MOMENT OF INTERACTION. THE ENERGY THAT WE PUT OUT HAS AN EFFECT ON OUR DOGS, CATS, ETC. AS HUMANS AND OWNERS OF THESE BEAUTIFUL BEINGS (OUR PETS) WE MUST BE PEACEFUL, POSITIVE, JOYFUL, AND SECURE FOR THEY ARE A REFLECTION OF US. WE MUST DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO REHABILITATE OUR PETS SO THAT WE CAN LIVE IN HARMONY WITH THEM, FOR THIS MAY EXTEND THEIR STAY WITH US... PEACE AND LOVE EVERYONE.

i think the various kinds of dog training need to be taken into consideration and to base training entirely on ceasers way would be irrisponsible a good relationship with a pet and working dog requires a balence in types of training , when have i seen ceaser praise a dog for a positive response ? ceaser also uses pinch collars wich i feel is detrimental to the training of a dog.

I have a poodle that is a therapy dog for the mentally impaired and a dachshund that is an earthdog champion. Anyone who knows anything about dogs will tell you that exercise, discipline, and affection (IN THAT ORDER) are the keys to having a happy dog. Dogs want to please us because that is what they were domesticated to do but most of us do not know how to communicate with our dogs. At the beginning and end of every episode it says "There are many methods available to help train your dog. Please consult a professional before attempting these techniques". If the critics want to treat their dogs like children go right ahead, that only makes you happy, not them. Many of the people Cesar helps have been shut out by the run of the mill obedience trainers, who turn around and criticize his success. Anyone can teach a dog to "sit", "stay" and "come", but fulfilling their needs by reading their behavior and projecting good energy is a whole different ball game!!! Don't be jealous that

I watched the show when I had cable and found Cesar's opinion very similar to my own: Much of the trouble with today's obese and spoiled dogs is that they're treated like four-legged people instead of dogs. Let dogs be dogs and try to understand them as they are. I have never heard of Cesar using a shock collar on a dog. Is there any proof of this? Choke chains, yes. They are a humane and effective tool when used properly. I think Cesar's critics feel threatened because he is getting results and rocking the boat. They are being challenged by this upstart from Mexico and don't like that he runs circles around them.

Critics? Critics make me want to laugh if their nonsense wasn't so serious. Critics are lazy and never have to identify themselves or demostrate their techniques are better or more effective. These individuals criticize with impunity because they never have to prove they are right. They make claims and assertions based on their so called superior understanding. Sorry, but I'm not impressed. To the critics: Why don't you stop whining like the spoiled little effectual cry babies you are and show what you can do? Until then, as far as I'm concerned, critics can roll their opinions up and stick them where...

Cesar doesn't treat dogs like dogs--he treats them based on myth and misunderstanding. (The dog's only motivation is dominance, according to Cesar.) He does train like many old-fashioned trainers do, it's true. He jerks, pins, jabs, and as a result, intimdates dogs and gets bitten. Amongst the punishmesnt he uses, he alos uses a shock collar! Modern trainers who understand behavior help their clients succeed with their pets, without punishment and pain. Cesar puts dogs and their owners at risk. I think he is probabably a nice guy-- he just ahd the misfortune to become a celebrity before he became an expert. I bet he would love to return to school and get the education and understanding he missed, if only he could evade his public to do so...

I'm also a fan of his show. I never believe the negative things people say about Cesar because I've attended obediance training with all 3 of my dogs and have participated in flyball as well and I can tell you that most of the techniques he uses are the same that are used by most trainers. The trainers I tend to deal with train working dogs like mind, border collies and understand the basics of dog mentality. His techniques do work, as I said I've used them in training and you can ask anyone on my block what they think of my dogs and they'll tell you that they wish their's were as well behaved. good article here, I hope more people adopt his thinking.
