If you are new to the sport of bowhunting the sometimes-elusive whitetail deer, you'll no doubt be on the receiving end of a multitude of opinions from friends and family who are already avid hunters. In their excitement to offer advice, oh yes hunting enthusiasts do become rather fervid about their sport, they may inadvertently withhold some of the most pertinent and basic pieces of information.

While reading these quick tips, keep in mind that not one single tip can assure you of success in the field. Occasionally a story is tossed around about a beginning bowhunter taking a deer on his first day hunting, don't be fooled, it takes time, practice and study of the whitetail's habits to become successful year after year.

Before the season starts

It is wise to start your hunting season early in the year and spend as much time as possible in the field scouting. By scouting and familiarizing yourself with the land and the animal sign in the area you are providing yourself with valuable knowledge that will allow you to setup your stand or blind in a good location for spotting deer. If your intention as a bowhunter is to still-hunt the land, scouting will familiarize you the terrain and any obstacles that may cause issues.

You will also have to set aside some time for getting to know your bow a little more intimately. Practice. Practice. Practice. It's nearly impossible for you to practice shooting your bow too much. If you're going to be hunting from a tree stand, set something up in your backyard that will put you approximately as far from the ground as your stand will be. You'll be amazed at how different it is shooting at your target from aloft. Before setting out for your first day of the hunt, make sure that you are positive you can accurately place the arrow for a clean and ethical kill

Deer noses are pretty incredible. The other nite there were 6 lovelies outside my mom's bedroom window. We stood in the window and tapped on the glass. You could see them trying to get a scent, but when they couldn't, they went back to eating. As soon as we quietly slid open the window -- well, within seconds, the scent reached them. Heads popped up and off they ran!
