Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone, Tennessee: Review
Touring Tennessee - One State Park & Tourist Attraction at a Time
Visiting Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone, Tennessee, made for a very interesting Saturday afternoon experience. My husband and I enjoyed seeing the tiny frontier cabin replica. It amazed us to think that Davy Crockett, the fifth of nine children, and his parents could have lived in such a tiny cabin. Of course, they were located in an ideal location as they were within a short walk of the Nolichucky River. When you get a chance, watch my video of this cabin. You will be able to see it inside and out. It would have been nice if the back door of the cabin had been open as well so that more light would reach inside. Nevertheless, we were able to see the bed, dining table, chairs, dishes on the table, basket suspended from the ceiling, fireplace, bookshelves, bear skin hung on the wall, and a ladder leading to a loft. I imagined the parents slept in the main cabin and the children slept up in the loft. Can't you just picture nine wall-to-wall children on mattresses squeezed in side by side by side in that tiny space?
Outside the cabin, you can see the "engraved footstone" that marked the spot of the original cabin where Davy Crockett was born in 1786. There was also a firing kiln, and outdoor fireplace. There was no sign of the privy the family and guests would have had to use. There were nearby kiosks filled with pictures and interesting information about the Crockett family and the time period when Davy Crockett lived.
We did not enter the museum. A visit to the park's website indicates that you can see many exhibits that highlight different features from the life of Davy Crockett. They show a short video during business hours that feature Davy Crockett as a hunter, politician, businessman, and "legendary hero."
