Miniature Wargaming: Warhammer, Flames of War, and Much More
Ever walked into a hobby store, and seeing people playing a game with miniature figures, commanding vast armies of small soldiers? If so, you've seen a miniature wargame!
Miniature wargames involves players collecting armies of small figures, often either historical, sci-fi, or fantasy, and then, using various rule sets, they fight against other players. Most of these gamers buy the figures, either in hobby or stores, or, online. These figures almost
always come unpainted, and gamers delight in painting their own designs, uniforms, and other patterns onto the soldiers. Some even go as far as to customize their soldiers by sculpting their own extra weapons, and other accessories onto the figures, using a type of modeling putty, sometimes called, "Green stuff."
Of course, there are also many gamers who buy their figures prepainted, off of websites like eBay, and then simply to battle. This often saves a lot of time, as painting an entire army can be rather time consuming (although still rewarding!), and lets those who aren't too concerned with painting, or who don't like to paint, play the game.
There is a lot of different rulesets, and miniature figure series out there, with everything from fantasy barbarians and cave men to futuristic space marines and aliens, with the obvious Napoleon wars in the middle. Games-Workshop is a huge company in the fantasy and sci-fi realm of miniature wargaming, and sells the popular Warhammer series (40k and Fantasy). Others, like Reaper and Old Glory, mostly just sell miniatures, with optional rulesets as a secondary focus. Warmachine is another very popular game, set in a steampunk world, with an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy.
Flames of War is the 'Warhammer' of historical battles, and is extremely popular. Basically, Flames of War involves WWII combat, with some impressive miniatures. WizKidz is a large company that offers a 'lighter' approach to wargaming, with HeroClix, Mech Warrior, and several other games that come with prepainted, affordable figures.
