Talking to your little children about what is going on and what to expect is essential to preventing any potential problems that you may have. They may not understand everything that you tell them, but you can remind them of what you talk about when it happens so they don't get frightened when it happens.
Simple ideas to prepare them are for instance if you have a toddler girl, maybe you could purchase a baby doll for them and teach them how to care for them. They can learn not to shout around them, hold them carefully, or rock them to sleep. This will give her some responsibility and make her feel important. You do not want them to feel out of the loop or they may start to act out and that may be the first sign of a potential long term problem.
When it is time to start shopping for your new bundle of joy, make sure that your child is part of the selection process. Take them shopping to find a new outfit, pick out the nursery, or maybe even a toy that both of them may be able to enjoy. Even a movie that they can watch together will make them feel part of everything and feel better about the whole situation.
