Craft Wooden Seed Packet Garden Stakes

It is traditional, in vegetable gardens, to push stakes, or small signs, into the ground to identify what grows in what row. These garden stakes have come a long way from their utilitarian beginnings. What was once only practical has become ornamental and has spread from vegetable to flower gardens.

Materials Needed for the Garden Stakes

1. Pre-cut wood shaped like plant pots
2. Acrylic craft paint
3. White craft glue
4. Sturdy metal spikes about 1 to 2 feet long
5. A drill
6. Weatherproof varnish or polyurethane

Decorating the Garden Stakes

The wooden garden stakes should first be sanded to remove any rough patches. Then, they should be painted with a coat of white paint to prime them. After that, you can paint them in any color or pattern that you like.

After the paint has dried, you will be decorating the garden stakes with the seed packets. Cut the pictures and words, if desired, off the front of the seed packet. Then, use a thinned white glue to attach them to the front of the garden stake. You can also use decoupage paste if you wish.

Preparing the Garden Stakes for Outside Use

To display the garden stakes outside, you first need to attach the metal spike, or thick wire, to the underside. Drill or use a hammer and nail to make a guide hole approximately one to two inches into the wooden shape. Then, squeeze some white craft glue into the hole and insert the metal spike. You might like to use thick wire to make a leaf motif or spirals around the wooden plant pot.

After the glue is dry, you will be coating the entire garden stake with weatherproof varnish. It is important to cover it completely with several coats.
