Automobile drivers in the State of Arizona will face a new tough decision on the 2008 election ballot. During the election of 2008, the voters of Arizona, who are most likely also automobile drivers, will have the opportunity to vote on the use of a cell phone while driving. Citizens of Arizona who will be participating as voters in the 2008 elections should become familiar with the ballot before hand in order to make the most informed decision. This would include learning more about cell phone use and the penalties that could occur should the law pass.

The proposed ballot measure that deals with cell phone use in Arizona while operating an automobile, if passed, would prohibit drivers from using cell phones while operating their vehicle without their hands-free device. If the cell phone using driver were using a hands-free device, then they would not be breaking the law and would not face any type of penalty. However, if they chose to use their cell phone while operating their automobile without any hands-free device, then they would be punished if found guilty of this crime. The punishment, according to the proposed ballot measure would be a fine ranging from $100 to $200.

Of course, as with most other laws, there are exceptions built into this proposal. The exception to this proposal is that emergency personal and people who are speaking to emergency personal or making calls to emergency agencies during a crisis situation will not be punished for not using hands-free devices.

I agree with making them illegal while driving, in fact I wish small range cell phone jammers were legal, since if the law is passed or not people will still use cell phones while driving. If it is an emergency, then the driver should pull to the side to make the call anyway.

I don't know about Arizona, but in California all phones are sold with a "hands free" device, even though they are usually far from high tech. Perhaps the best way would be to mandate that ALL cell phones sold in America must have a "speakerphone" option. I remember, in the infancy of cell phones, when Chrysler had an "in the sun visor" phone option with a speaker and microphone. It was dropped because back then c-phones were so rare. Maybe that option's time has come again.

I can see why they want to put an end to driving and talking on the phone. Some people can't do both ,they are a huge safety risk to others.Great article.
