Movie Review: Feast
This Blood- and Gore-fest is Well Worth It
If you ever wanted to see Henry Rollins in tight, pink sweats or two road-kill monsters fornicating doggie-style, then stop what you're watching and go out and add Feast (available on DVD) to your movie cue. With the influx of horror and gore films splattering the big screen it's a wonder that Feast never made it to the box
The film is set in the middle of nowhere with a group of barflies being attacked by creatures, which may or may not be road kill come to life.
Shot in the vein of "Tremors," the small group must figure out how to get out of the bar and away from the hideous beings that would just as soon rip your head off as copulate with you.
Feast (2005) leaves its mark in its quest to be as disgusting as possible. But unlike with torture films such as "Saw III" or "Hostel," it's not an attempt to make the viewer go queasy. Instead, it attempts to make audiences laugh in its gruesome delivery.
The most original aspect of the film is in its introduction to each character. Rather than let you try and figure out which character is going to survive, or which character is which stereo-typed character in every film, the picture opens by telling you who is who.
It also leads you to believe it is telling you who will survive and who won't. For example, when the audience first meets Hot Wheels (Josh Zuckerman), the wheelchair-bound character, his life-expectancy as described by the film is: "They wouldn't kill the handicapped kid, would they?"
The low-budget film is more notable for its executive producers than its actors. The main stars are Balthazar Getty ("Ladder 49" and TV's "Alias") and Henry Rollins ("Heat," "Bad Boys II").
The film came out of the "Greenlight Project 3" reality show produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, two of the movie's producers. Also the Maloof brothers, owners of the NBA's Sacramento Kings and the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas are executive producers.
But it's not the acting that makes the movie. It's definitely the gore.
