Spring gardening can be a little daunting at times. Spring gardening should be fun for the family. It is an activity that you can encourage teens and other family members to join.

Often itching to have items grow, people begin Spring gardening too early. The weather becomes sunny. The stores are selling live plants in trays, hanging baskets and planters. Everyone seems to be itching for beautiful flowers and fresh vegetables.

The first thing to remember with Spring gardening is to only do container plants and starter plants until after Easter. In the cooler climates, you might want to wait to do anything outside until after Mother's Day. A sudden frost can kill a new garden.

If you plant container gardens, these can be brought inside should the weather decide to become cold. Start container gardens as early as Easter. If you are using seeds, they will have time to grow before moving them outside. If you are doing plants, the root balls will have time to establish before moving them outside. Container gardens have a chance to get established inside and avoid frost.

Seedlings are great to start indoors. These can be started as early as Easter. You can plant the seeds in old, cardboard egg cartons or use the traditional seed trays. By starting the seeds inside, you give the vegetables a chance to grow. A strong root ball system can be formed early. If there is a sudden frost, the seedlings will not immediately be killed by old man winter's blows.

Seedlings started indoors can be thinned fairly easily. As the seedlings sprout and grow they will eventually need thinning. If you start them in the seed trays or egg cartons, when it is time to plant the seedlings in your garden they will separate fairly easily for you. You will not have to pull up plants from the garden because you can plant them evenly with the seedlings.

Takeaways
  • Grow seedlings and herbs inside until the weather is safe.
  • Discourage birds feeding on the garden with larger seedlings.
