In an earlier product review I tried to warn readers away from Pringles Bacon Ranch potato chips. I don't consider myself an expert on potato chips, but I know bad food when I taste it. As the flip side to a warning against patently inedible chips, now I'd like to actually recommend a brand of chips. I don't know if you've had the chance to try out Doritos Fiery Habanero tortilla chips or not, but if you are a fan of spicy snacks then you definitely should look into them. The fact is that most spicy chips are advertised well beyond their capacity to inflict any kind of real damage to your taste buds, but Doritos Fiery Habanero chips can you leave your tongue tingling.

I've tried a lot of hot chips in my life, both of the potato and corn variety. I've tried many of the jalapeno flavored chips, and even the chips flavored with Tabasco. My contention is that every food improves with the addition of Tabasco-except for desserts, that's just one place I don't like heat. And while I enjoy the potato chips flavored with Tabasco, they don't really leave my tongue doing a triple flip in the pike position like I would hope. To be perfectly honest, I've tasted chips hotter than the Doritos Fiery Habanero chips, but they are made by specialty companies that also make hot sauces. As far as the big name mainstream brand chip companies are concerned, these spicy little triangles are sit firmly at the top of the heat. Er, I mean heap.

Just opening the bag gives an indication of what's come. Doritos has not been stingy in the application of the spicy coating. (Too bad one cannot say the same thing about the actual number of chips in those small bags of Doritos.) Upon opening the shocking orange bag you will be greeted with an aroma that is like Chanel #5 to those who enjoy spicy snacks. The scent of heat that escapes from the bag of Doritos Fiery Habanero chips doesn't suffer from the infusion of too much cheese the way nacho chips do. These chips are all about heat and that delightful smell that crawls into your nostrils and drives you wild is not terribly concerned with recreating the idea that you are eating ballpark nachos.

Not the hottest chips around, but maybe the hottest put out by a major brand.

They aren't very hot in my opinion. Ver over-rated.

Tim is unquestionably the expert on spicy foods. I know this from more than 25 years of personal knowledge. Inspired by him, my taste for hot foods has increased considerably...
