Who wants peace on earth? Every parent with young children, and many grade school classroom teachers can relate to the need for a little peace and quiet. If noisy children tend to upset your serenity, going to Chuck E Cheese for lunch is not the place to be. How about when you are trying to sleep and a neighbor's music sounds like a live band is playing next door? Seems everywhere we go, we are bombarded with noise that takes away our feeling of tranquility. These are good times to remember this quote about peace:

#1 "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me." Seymour Miller & Jill Jackson

If you desire peace on earth, learning to deal with the irritations and frustrations that we all face everyday, is a good place to begin. Every minute you are angry is 60 seconds when you could be happy. Pick your anger! Look at it this way: here comes that tsunami wave, do you want your last moments on earth to be filled with your ranting and raving about little things? The children will quiet down, the neighbors will turn off the music. Eventually. Take a deep breath and wait it out. If you want peace on earth, think of this quote:

#2 "First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others." Thomas A. Kempis

The Dutch have an expression:

#3 "It is better to keep peace than to make peace."

Attitudes are contagious. What happens when someone yells at you? Usually "a word causing pain, makes anger come up" (Proverbs 15:1, Bible). If we can learn that "an answer when mild turns away rage", resonding quietly when our peace is disrupted by angy words, we just might create an attitude worth spreading. Buddha pointed out:

#4 "Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace."

Endeavor to "keep your words tender and sweet, for tomorrow, you may have to eat them" is an expression worth listening to! But, "who wants peace on earth?", you might ask. Here are two quotes that will tell you why world peace is a good aspiration:

#5 "Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind" John F. Kennedy

#6 "Either war is obsolete or men are." R. Buckminster Fuller

Takeaways
  • Attitudes are contagious
  • Ben Franklin said, "There was never a good war or a bad peace."
  • "Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind" John F. Kennedy

I think sometimes people have to see things that are bigger than themselves to understand why they should stop doing what they do to create negativity. A woman I work with said she goes to a shelter to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving every year because it humbles her. The events like the Jena 6 and my issues with NMU humble me. When I want to gripe about stuff that I'm mad about at the moment, I think back to things that are so much bigger. I'm sure Mychal Bell would love to have the opportunity to complain about the annoying co-worker who talks about her cat like a child or how terrible Wells/State Street traffic is. There are bigger things in the world. I think that's what makes me less of a complainer. When I hear others complain, unless I really like them, I usually tune them out.
