According to the Travel Industry Associated more people than ever are looking to spend their vacation in a service capacity. In fact, about one-third of all vacationers are choosing a volunteer or service-based theme vacation this year.

With the increased interest in volunteer vacations it is important consumers ask themselves specific questions before they embark on a service vacation.

Here are some tips for the volunteer traveler:

  • Thoroughly research the volunteer organization you are choosing. Do research on how long they have been an active charity and whether or not they have any complaints against them with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Research the Internet and talk with the staff of the organization to make sure you are picking an appropriate volunteer vacation that suites your style and expertise.
  • Make sure they provide pre-departure advice about the destination, are responsible for visas, inoculations and insurance.
  • That there will be a point person at the destination to answer questions, help in daily routine and provide an arrival orientation.
  • Inquire as to what the organizations emergency plan are in case anything happens during your vacation. Make sure you ask if they have emergency plans for all types of incidents (IE. Weather related, government coo, etc).
  • Ask to speak with past volunteers before you commit to anything.
  • Make sure that the organization is going to retrieve you from the airport and take you to your final destination.
Volunteer vacations are available in hundreds of host communities on six continents. They serve, sponsor and support local people in everything from teaching English, health care, construction, child care, painting and a world of other opportunities. There are also many service based travel opportunities that are animal oriented; helping feed and save wildlife all over the world.
