TV shows make the life of a fireman to be glorious and filled with drama, but it's not all that. Picture more of a lonely life where it is you and your children 90 percent of the time. Your husband is
always either on his way to an emergency or coming back from one. It is a life of uncertainty. A road trip may be interrupted at a moments notice or dinner plans fore gone because a call ran longer than expected.
I am extremely proud of my husband and what he does but it is not with out sacrifice. He is a career fireman working twenty four hour shifts and sometimes three shifts in a row. There are weeks when we see him only one night of the week. This takes a toll on the heart and the relationship. The wife is always on the back burner, for when he comes home the children eat up their daddy, whom they have missed very much. Leaving very little time for the wife or for romance.
I sometimes wonder what it would be like to have him home every night for dinner and bath time with the kids. Would it make life simpler or just more complicated. At least when he is home he has the enter day with us not coming and going everyday from work. Though it has gotten to the point that we almost live separate lives. It is like our path just tend to cross each other occasionally.
The kids and I have our routines that we do everyday and when my husband is home it interrupts that routine. We even stopped sleeping in the same bed for a while because we were not use to each others sleeping habits, we would keep each other up. So one of us would go to the couch half way through the night just to be able to sleep.
