Inflight magazines are a great way to break into publishing markets. Most take nonfiction, fiction, even photographs. Airlines are always looking for good work for their handouts, and lack people to write it. So fire up your queries and set off for the skies with these inflight magazine markets.


1) Attache Magazine, Pace Communications, 1301 Carolina, Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27401 attacheedit@attachemag.com http://www.attachemag.com

Attache is 60% written by freelancers and is given out to passengers on US Airways. They see travel, food, and business nonfiction articles, as well as general interest, personal experience, and sports pieces. Attache inflight magazine buys 50-75 pieces a year, all around 350-2,500 words in length. They pay from $350 to $2500. They will accept email queries along with postal queries.

2) Horizon Air Magazine, Paradigm Communications Group, 2701 First Avenue, Suite 250, Seattle Washington, 98121

Horizon Air is 90% written by freelancers. They are slanted for travel, business, and leisure in the Northwest, and will all have a northwestern slant in how they are written. They buy around 36 pieces a year, all ranging from 1,500-3,000 words in length. They pay from $300 to $700. They will take a query or the complete manuscript under review.

Hemispheres is 95% written by freelancers and is given out to the passengers of United Airlines. They reach approximately a half a million readers. Nonfiction pieces in Hemispheres are general interest, humor, and personal experience. They pay 50 cents a word and up for articles in the 500-3,000 word length range.

This market also takes fiction pieces about adventure, mainstream, mystery, humor, and ethnic genres. They will buy 14 of these a year, and pay 50 cents a word and up for pieces 1,000-4,000 words in length. For fiction, send the entire piece for them to review.

Really nice. I've been toying with this because I heard inflights were one of the best places for new magazine writers to break in.
