Over the past five weeks I've bought more brand name food, paper goods, diapers and toiletries than we've ever had in our house at one time. Yet I've saved money doing it and have reduced my monthly g
rocery budget by several hundred dollars. My technique is fairly simple: I signed up to participate in The Grocery Game on www.thegrocerygame.com. Now, don't rush to join the Game just because I said it worked for me. While The Grocery Game has the potential to help people save a lot of money on groceries, it's just not the kind of "game" that everyone would enjoy or be willing to participate in.

The Grocery Game was first established by Teri Gault for members in Southern California. It has since expanded to stores in 48 states. It professes to help people save money on groceries (including food products, baby and pet products, paper products, drug store items, and other toiletries) by using a database to track product prices and coupons and by giving a weekly list of which sales at your local grocery or drug store are truly "rock bottom" prices. It costs $1 for a one-month trial to see any or all of the "List stores" in your area. After the trial period you pay $10 for one List store for every 8 weeks plus an extra $5 for each additional List store during that same time frame.

On the public message board for The Grocery Game (www.terismessageboard.com), you will find many posts by people who really do appear to be saving money. Each week, members can report their savings which might range from, for example, 35% to 90%. Some of the savings members report on the message board may seem unbelievable, but I can confirm what they are saying because I'm experiencing it, too. After these five weeks, I've saved more than 80% at some stores and am averaging about 43% savings overall. I expect my average to go even higher as I get better at the Game.

I attribute my success to being willing to spend more time getting ready to shop and more time organizing my coupons. If you really want to save money on groceries with The Grocery Game, you have to be willing to follow a few unwritten rules. The Grocery Game works if:

Thanks for the review! I would consider joining the grocery game, but it cost money which I'm a little hesitant about. I would rather use a site like Consumer Queen or Coupon Mom - just my opinion.

Dittos my experience: The first store @ $10 for 8 weeks was a great experience, so I signed up for two more stores thinking it was worth a try for another $10 ($5 for each store's list). Imagine my suprise in getting billed $40 for the 8 weeks!! They say I'm getting a free 8 weeks but no way. I'm just getting to pay for 16 weeks upfront. The billing is a scam be VERY CAREFUL WITH UPGRADES...(try all the stores in your first 8 weeks then drop whatever you dont' want. Don't upgrade unless you want to pay dearly.) We are trying to work it out now, but I'm not very hopeful. The first reply was "Well, that's the way an upgrade works." Kind of 'in your face' if you ask me. One more word of caution. If you already subscribe to the other lists in your area, the WalMart list is worthless. Unless you want to put a lot of work into it or are dedicated to WalMart I found it's too much work for too little value. On the flipside, with a little more work on your end, you might be able to su

I have used the Grocery game for about 6 months. It is priceless at CVS and Walgreens. I basically get most items for 75% off or free. I definitely recommend it, but you have to stick to it and spend time every week planning and shoping at multiple locations. It is a challenge to see what deals you can get, so it works for me.

The Grocery game's billing department stinks and they will not refund your money for any reason!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be very cautious when joining!

Thanks, I appreciated your frank point on the grocery game. You were able to let people know that the grocery game is nice but may not be right for everyone. I have a blog on money management at: http://www.watchyastep.typepad.com/money ; I always appreciate other peoples comments on how to help people save money.

You have inspired me to join the game. I already play my own shopping game and this will actually shorten my prep time. Thanks

Getting caught up in the game is easy, you see the savings and you spend more, I can say I'm guilty sometimes. So far it's worth the extra time and effort. I have seen a 23% savings in my grocery shopping in the last 2 weeks. I'm sure it will get better and I'll save more as I become a more savvy shopper.
