In Manhattan
1) Chinatown Ice Cream Factory - 65 Bayard Street (Between Elizabeth and Mott Streets). As the name indicates this place is located downtown in Chinatown. It has your typical flavors, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. But what sets this place apart is its variety of Asia inspired flavors such as green tea, mango and lychee. The cost is about $3 a scoop, but well worth the price as the long lines indicate.
2) Cones - 272 Bleeker Street (Between Morton and Jones Street). Located in Greenwich Village, offers not only a wide variety of ice cream, but also sells gelato and sorbet. Cones is owned by two brothers from Argentina and some of the flavors have an Argentinean flavor.
3) Emack and Bolio's - 389 Amsterdam Avenue. You may have to wait on a long line, but it is well worth the wait. They offer a wide variety of products such as frozen yogurt, smoothies and sorbet. The also offer kosher, nonfat and sugar free products.
4) Dylan's Candy Bar - 1011 3rd Avenue at 60th Street. This place is more of a sweet shop, with a wide variety of candy. But is also has wide variety of ice cream.
5) Laboratorio del Gelato - 95 Orchard Street. As the name implies is best known for its gelato. Everything is homemade on the premises. They have the standard flavors, vanilla and chocolate. But the menu changes on a daily basis, with new flavors each day. Many people say this is the best gelato outside of Italy.
6) Cold Stone Creamery - 253 W 42nd Street. This is a chain so you can find them all over the five boroughs. The have a wide variety of flavors, so you can pretty much get whatever you want.
In Brooklyn
1) Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory - Fulton Ferry Landing Pier at Old Fulton Street. If you are looking for exotic flavors this place is not for you. But they offer the old standby's vanilla, chocolate, chocolate chip, butter pecan. As an added bonus you can walk along the pier for breathtaking views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Skyline.
