Have you ever walked into a store and seen aisle after aisle of cosmetics, without an idea of where to start? Here is a guide to help you figure out what foundation will work best on your skin and how to use it!

Uses: Foundation is used to protect the skin and smooth out your complexion. It helps to hide minor blemishes.

Application: Sprinkle water or put a small dab of moisturizer onto a facial sponge and then squeeze a pea-size amount of foundation onto it. Apply a dot to your forehead, nose, chin, cheeks, and a few on your throat, then smooth over the face working it upward and outward. Make sure you don't have any lines where the foundation ends and your unprotected skin begins. For thicker coverage, apply with clean fingertips. After applying, pat with a wet sponge to set the foundation and keep the skin from looking dull. If you feel like that takes away too much foundation, just apply some loose face powder afterwards. Use in the mornings as part of your skin care regimen.

Tips: Our faces have about seven different shades, so try to find a foundation that is one of the darker shades. It will appear much more natural. Test a spot on your cheek before buying to ensure you get the right color. You should not be able to see it after two minutes. Most women have skin that is yellow-based, so try for one that is more yellow than pink first. You will probably need to buy a different color according to the season. Women with fair skin will probably need a darker shade for the summer and a lighter one in the winter. In the fall and spring, you can mix the two colors, as long as they are the same brand. If you have any freckles, I recommend showing them off by applying a thin layer of foundation with a sponge, instead of trying to cover them up and caking too much foundation on.

Recommendations: I recommend a medium coverage foundation, but if you have acne scarring you might want to use full coverage. A cream to power finish works well if you have young skin, but if you have fine lines and wrinkles, it will actually make those appear more prominently.
