After so many thousands of years of existence on the planet and experimentation with all forms of governments, democracy has emerged as the most popular form of government.

One of the main reasons why people have put their faith in democracy is that they believe it will ensure their 'Human Rights'. Human Rights violations take place quite blatantly in non-democratic forms of government where too much power is concentrated in the hands of too few. Every one knows that the Human Rights movement started in a big way only after the excesses committed by the dictators, despots and tyrants woke up every one. One might recall the following famous quotation:

In Germany, the Nazis first came for the communists, and I did not speak up, because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak up, because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak up, because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I did not speak up, because I was not a Catholic. Then they came for me... and by that time, there was no one to speak up for anyone.

- Martin Niemoeller, Pastor, German Evangelical (Lutheran) Church

To someone like me, living in the world's largest democracy, in a metropolitan city, in a posh area, in an economically well-off family - a student who has been educated in excellent institutions, in short, one whose human rights have never been under threat - this topic comes as a great surprise. My first thought is - how silly! What is there to think about Human Rights under a democracy? Doesn't democracy by its very definition ensure human rights? Isn't democracy and human rights synonymous? Can one possibly exist without the other? Democracy as we all know is a government "of the people, for the people, by the people". So, by its very definition, shouldn't it ensure Human Rights to every citizen?

Takeaways
  • Even in a democracy, human rights violations take place very frequently.
  • The mind is the only source of all evil in society.
  • It is very difficult to enforce laws on people who are slaves of their minds.

Your thoughts are commendable. In democracy itself we see so much poverty and the difference in classes (castes, money, power). We'd rather not talk about human rights. So why the discriminations and attacks on countries that are non democratic? Making it into a democray is not going to alleviate the problems faced by the people. They are still affected, be it any system of governance.

It does seem to complicate things, if a democracy is willing to commit atrocities, or stand by in favor of doing nothing, then is democracy truly the thing all countries should strive for?

A baby comes into the world completely dependent upon the parent for survival. As it matures it is only natural to want to participate in making choices in it's own life. I never understood why people are so busy enforcing rules on other humans, kind of like the parents that will beat a child into submission.

master piece among yours, so far i read. don't you think that every hunger mouth must be fed , and amount of food available is always more than the demand in this planet at all times!! do we have heart to share and care our fellow human being as country/as a community/as a family?? nature is a donar who provides in abundance but we human beings wants to hoard it. good effort in bringing this kind of thought proviking one. c g n

A highly interesting and original synthesis of political and psychological insights. I applaud your emphasis on individual self-responsibility and self-control as the solutions to the problems that plague modern democracies. Indeed, the battle for a better future must first be fought within ourselves.
