Those that rent their homes or apartments know that finding a new rental property can be somewhat difficult. I am currently in the process of looking for a larger space than the one I am in now and there are quite a few things to take into consideration. I'd like to share a few:

Know Your Location!

Make sure you are familiar with the area within which you are looking to rent. Drive around the neighborhood and take a look at your potential surroundings. Does everything look run down or are the homes and complexes in the area taken care of? These are important clues that people tend to overlook. Notice whether or not you see children on the streets and in playgrounds during the day and/or whether or not there is a lot of activity on the streets at night. Check the news and papers for reports on crime levels in the area. If you have children, be sure to visit schools and do some research on the area's school district.

Private or Complex?

There are some differences when it comes to renting from a private party or a large complex. Larger apartment complexes tend to have a larger and stricter set of rules to be followed. These might range from where you can park to how and when you can take out your garbage. One problem I have seen with larger complexes is that the sins of others can be mistaken for your own. For example, if your neighbor leaves a bag of garbage out on the shared stoop or stairwell instead of taking it to the dumpster, the maintenance people may mistake it as your bag of garbage. Some complexes impose additional monetary fines and penalties for rules that are broken and fighting these could become an issue. Another issue is maintenance. With a large complex, maintenance issues could go either way. You have an advantage in a large complex because they have maintenance people on staff most hours, so any issue you have can be dealt with. On the other hand, those same maintenance people may be overworked and your issues may fall through the cracks.

I have moved so often that I have these down pat. When moving to Vegas I found a home 32 minutes after finding out we were moving. This time when we move I am going to take a little more time though!

I always try to go through all these things when renting a new place. I'm actually hoping to rent a new apartment in the next month or so. Good article.

These are good tips and yes what savings you get from renting an older place may be lost in the utilities to try and stay comfortable.

These are excellent tips. My sister was moving back home from the D.C. area and she had my mom and another sister look at the areas for her. She also prefers private properties. Good article.
