Over the past few years, I've spent a small fortune on store brand nonprescription sleeping pills, and unfortunately, I thought I needed them in order to fall asleep. My ex husband took nonprescription sleeping pills each night, and at some point I thought I had to have them too. The nonprescription sleeping pills were my guarantee that I'd get the rest I so desperately needed, and I didn't want to take a chance on not being able to fall asleep at all. They provided assurance that I would sleep the entire six or seven hours I allowed myself.

Although I took nonprescription sleeping pills to fall asleep, they certainly didn't always help me sleep the entire night. When I was in the habit of taking them, I'd still wake up at least once during the night, and strangely enough, I didn't feel all that rested in the morning. I also quit remembering my dreams, and my sleep cycle became more screwed up than ever before. Even still, I continued taking them because I wasn't willing to risk not being able to fall asleep.

Recently I ran out of my usual nonprescription sleeping pills, and I was faced with the prospect of having to fall asleep without them. At first, I worried that I would have trouble sleeping and would feel miserable as a result, but after the first few nights without my over-the-counter sleeping pills, I realized I didn't really need them. Amazingly, I'm dreaming again, and I'm remembering my dreams. I actually feel more rested, and now I realize I never really needed nightly nonprescription drugs in order to fall asleep.

Nonprescription sleeping pills don't contain ingredients that create chemical dependency, but after my experience, I can see how they are nonetheless addicting. Everyone occasionally has trouble falling asleep, and nonprescription sleeping pills can be beneficial when taken now and then. The problem is, it's real easy to take a couple of pills before bed, and after a few sleepless nights, many people think nonprescription sleep aids are the answer.

Good advice. With my busy schedule, I panic when I can't fall asleep because I only get a few hours anyway. Still, you make valid points so I think I'll take your advice and cross my fingers.
