Paula Abdul Leaving American Idol?
Paula Abdul could be leaving American Idol. At least that's what her manager said during an interview with The Los Angeles TImes. David Sonenberg told the paper on Friday that "she's not a happy camper". Sonenberg went on to say Paula is hurt and angry.
Sonenberg tells the Los Angeles Times that he has yet to receive a contract proposal for Abdul. What will this mean for American Idol if she truly is leaving the show?
The chemistry between Simon and Paula will be tough to match. Kara might be able to garner some of the attention if she sticks around. But it won't be quite the same without Paula Abdul. Even if she sometimes seems aloof she is the steady positive voice of the show which compliments Simon quite well.
If Paula were to quit American Idol because of the lack of a contract, she would leave the show in a little bit of a dilemma. Do you stick with Kara and let her bounce off of Randy and Simon? Or do you bring in a new gun to create some new chemistry with the other judges? It'll be a tough decision for FOX if a settlement is not reached. But people have worked without contracts before. Paula has judged the show for eight years and her absence would certainly make it different.
The good thing for FOX is they probably can adjust and make it without the banter that people have become accustomed to. The show added a fourth judge last season so they are definitely willing to try new things to juice it up a bit. It certainly isn't growing stale with millions of Americans watching the finale where Kris Allen triumphed over Adam Lambert last season. So the question is, do you tinker with the chemistry and what's working to keep evolving? Or do you stick with what got you there?
That's a huge dilemma the producers will have to entertain if Paula Abdul abruptly leaves the show. Will it happen? I don't think the producers of American Idol certainly want to take that chance. But they probably aren't willing to bend over backwards and pay Paula Abdul millions more to stick around either.
