Staying Healthy While Eating Out
Eating out is a favorite American pastime. It gives us the opportunity to eat well while spending time with our friends in a pleasing atmosphere. Sadly, eating out usually doesn't mean staying lean. However, if you are on a diet, there is no reason you should stop enjoying restaurants.
Here are a few tips to help you stay healthy while you continue eating out.
Eat Out at Lunch
Lunchtime is the best time to eat out. It is great for your pocket book and also for your waistline. Prices and portions are usually substantially smaller for the lunch crowd. This allows you to have a nice, full meal while eating fewer calories and spending less money than you normally would.
Eating Out: Meats and Fish
When eating out and searching the restaurant's menu, search for buzz words. For instance, avoid entrees that include the words fried, au gratin, sautéed, creamed, or buttery. You should always choose dishes that use the terms grilled, broiled, steamed, or roasted. If you have your choice, make sure you choose a healthy preparation method when eating out.
Don't Be Starving When Eating Out
It is always wise to go to a restaurant with a half-full stomach. Never arrive starving. This will increase the chance that you will eat too much bread or be tempted to purchase a fatty appetizer. If you are half-full when eating out, you will eat less, but still have the enjoyment of dining out.
Eating Out: Ordering Order
If you are dining with friends, make sure you order your meal before anyone else. This makes it easier for you to choose a healthy entrée as opposed to an unhealthy one because your friends have done the same. Stick to your guns when you are eating out. Your health will thank you later.
Eating Out: Split a Meal
Splitting a meal when eating out is one of the best ways to cut back on calories. If you buy a meal yourself with the intention of bringing half home, you will be more likely to overeat. However, if you split a meal with someone else at your table, you are forced to only have a half serving. Another benefit to this method is the price. You get half the food for half the price.
