The skeletons that were found were scattered instead of piled up on top of each other, leading investigators to think that is more likely a serial killer than anything else. Clothing or personal items were not found on any of the bones that were found. There had been no remaining flesh as well. All eight skeletons that were found were believed to be adults. Some of the bones seemed to have been chewed by animals in the area.
The eight skeletons that were found, were in a brush covered area just a couple of miles from downtown Ft. Myers. A surveyor who was checking the site for development discovered the first skeleton on March 23, 2007, the other seven were discovered immediately within a 200 yard radius.
Forensic scienctists are working hard to put the skeletons together, while a botanist and an entomologist are examining plants and insects that were at the scene to determine how long the bones had actually been there. A forensic anthropologist, Heather Walsh-Haney from the Florida Gulf Coast University is helping others determine the age, race and gender of the skeletons which is a very time consuming process. They are also hoping to conclude how the people perished.
Former FBI profiler, John Douglas told officials that the absence of clothing and personal items with the skeletons leads him to believe that they were a "serial murderer graveyard"
He also went to say that 'To find eight bodies in one place, that's really bizarre,' Douglas said. 'If you're in the business of killing people, that's a great disposal area,' he added. 'You've got the remoteness, the elements, the heat, the insects, animal predation. You put a body out there and probably within a week or so, there's not going to be much left.'
