Acupuncture, according to experts in Chinese medicine, involves the insertion of tiny, thin needles into certain parts of the body in order to simulate it to treat an illness or disorder. These portions of the body are known as meridians, and are located beneath the skin's surface. By placing needles into strategic locations, practitioners of acupuncture believe that vital energy can be channeled into the body, or can be revived when it was once lost. This vital energy, referred to as Qi, supposedly warms, protects, and shields the body. Qi also purportedly makes the body's organs stronger, and governs how they operate.
If the Qi is blocked, specialists in Chinese medicine need to redirect it through the use of needles, hence the art of acupuncture. Although this may seem outlandish, the concept of Qi has a promising biological basis. According to research, the insertion of needles at certain body points can stimulate the production of beta-endorphins in the body, which are needed to keep healthy. Today, acupuncture is not simply needle insertion. It can also entail needle stimulation through small electrical impulses, and coupling the acupuncture treatment with other massage and relaxation techniques.

In the past, therapists used methadone to replace a drug of choice. Methadone, however, can still make the body feel the need to take drugs and be dependent on them. Acupuncture can remove that feeling.
