Getting older brings with it the joy of food allergies and increased risk for diabetes. In order to accommodate these changes I needed a lifestyle change. I needed to find a health food store somewhere convenient and reasonably priced to make the change. This is when I came across Henry's Farmers Market in Temecula, CA and found immense satisfaction in the store's friendly and inviting atmosphere and its display of familiar products.

In past visits to health food stores I was intimidated by both the price of healthy products and the unfamiliarity of the products on the shelves. I didn't understand what soy protein was, nor did I find the concept appetizing. The merchandise selection was thin and I was certain that eating healthy meant learning to go without. If I felt a bit daring I would leave the store with a protein bar and maybe a bottle of carrot juice to wash it down.

When you visit Henry's Farmers Market you will first notice how appealing the store is to the eyes. The arrangement of colorful produce draws instant attention. With openness in mind the store offers raised ceilings and a country décor. There is a distinct ambiance of a good old fashioned farmers market.

In the spring and summer months the air inside the store is ripe with the smell of fresh berries and other fresh produce of the season. As you near the deli, the smell of the savory seasoned soups wafts around you. Your senses will be warmly welcomed by the stores commitment to produce "an authentic farmers market environment."

Henry's, a popular shortening of the store name, was started back in 1943 when the founders, the Boney family, loaded up a truck with freshly picked peaches, drove them to a street corner in San Diego, CA and began selling them. From a small idea grew a much larger one. In 1999, Henry's, now a thriving market, was purchased by Wild Oats. The name was then established as Henry's Marketplace.

Takeaways
  • The air inside the store is ripe with the smell of fresh produce of the season.
  • The smell of the savory seasoned soups wafts around you.
  • In keeping with the farmers market theme Henry's offers "side-of-the-road prices."
