Wire comes in so many different gauges that it can be difficult to decide what kind to buy. Not so with this simple wire project - just choose any wire that's easy to bend without tools. Actually, you can even purchase wire that does require tools, so long as you're willing to go through the extra trouble.

There's a wire craft that's appropriate for any home or decor setting, is easy enough for anyone to do, and is affordable enough to fit even the tightest budget. And the best thing about this wire project is that the only material required is the wire, although you can add other things to the wire project to change the look.

Form the initial of your last name by bending and twisting the wire until it is properly shaped. Go over the letter again and again until it has many wires that form the letter. The size you make the letter is up to you depending upon the project on which you will use it. You can make tiny letters to attach to baskets, picture frames and vases, or large ones to place over the top of a door, or to add interest to a bookcase.

If you're afraid the curves, like in an "S" won't be proportionate, just get a book, magazine or catalog and use a letter from it as a guide. Lay the wire on the magazine and bend the shape until it looks like the one on which it's lying. Remove from the catalog and begin adding your extra layers.

As you add more and more wire to the original letter, it's fun to twist the wire around a portion of the letter, form curly-q's at the beginning of a letter, or even add bends in the wire, here and there, as you're working.

For the letter "O", you can use an object from around the house - like a soup can - so that it's easy to wrap the wire. After you've wrapped it several times, remove it from the can and use a piece of wire to go in and out of the center circle to form a wrapping for the wire layers.
