NORFOLK, VA - Over the course of the last few weeks, pet owners have heard all kinds of reasons why their pet's food might be tainted. The problem is, none of the specialists in the area seem to agree on the cause. Now it appears that the original pet food recall, which included some 60 million cans and foil packs of food from Menu Foods, may not have been extensive enough. Evidence indicates that the same contaminate found in poisoned wet food may also be found in the dry food products of an as yet unknown vendor.

Early reports from Menu Foods, the Ontario based company responsible for the initial pet food recall, was that there was a problem with the wheat gluten. This appeared to make sense because a similar problem was responsible for an earlier pet food recall in 2005. At that time, Diamond Pet Foods, a Missouri based company, recalled many varieties of its food when it found aflatoxin in the products. Aflatoxin is a poison produced by fungi that grows on grains of the type typically used to make wheat gluten, the thickening agent for gravy of wet pet food cuts.

On Friday, March 23rd, however, during a press conference, other experts stated that rat poison was the culprit responsible for the most recent string of cat and dog deaths. According to the New York State Food Laboratory, they found 40 parts per million of aminopterin in the food samples provided by Menu Foods.

The use of aminopterin is not allowed in the U.S. except for research purposes because the drug is known to cause cancer and birth defects in humans. Other countries, however, continue to use the substance in rat poison. Experts were quick to agree, however, that it is highly unlikely that the chemical would be used to spray a crop against rodent infestation.

Our dog is our "Child"...in fact we don't have kids because we love our dog (Buck) so much. He is as much family as any child could be...I can't imagine anything happening to him. My heart goes out to the people and animals suffering from this recall! Great article Charlotte!

If anything happened to my mother's dog, I think it would kill her.

Only one dry food was recalled, the "Prescription Diet m/d Feline" and only because it recieves its wheat gluten from the same place that the Menu Foods plant did. On the note of "wheat gluten meal" vs "wheat gluten" I have yet to find anything on the FDA's site about the 'meal' version. If you are still worried there are many foods that do not use any form of wheat. One good one is the Wellness brand of food.

Dittos to Minus Factor. These pet deaths were absolutely horrible, but PETA's Norfolk, VA, shelter is complicit in the apparently senseless "euthanization" of thousands of pets. PETA is no friend to domesticated animals. Consult your vet about the best alternative food for pets, though; they require nutrients that humans don't, and simply feeding your dog hamburger may not meet his nutritional needs. (they are arguably omnivores!)

Great job, Charlotte. It makes me sick to think about all those pets who suffered needlessly.

It was horrible with not only our food, but the food that people feed their pets. Most people treat pets like family members. Great job!

Wishing you well with your pup Charolette!

P.S. We have always fed our cat tuna. She was adopted, and after the adoption and her new diet of tuna, her fur became VERY soft and beautiful.

When PETA stops killing animals (there are plenty of articles about it, both on AC and elsewhere), then they can be taken seriously again. Until then, I see them as nothing more than a "hype" group drawing fuel (and of course resources) from political inflamation of issues. Support your local animal shelters and do what is right by your pets. As for the pet food, it is a tragedy to say the least, and I hope that the pet food companies do what is right and safe.

Great idea, Grif. My puppy started acting a little strange yesterday. I have to take her to the vet today to see if she is just having allergy problems or what. She's lethargic and has a slight temperature which scares me. I thought she was safe because her dog food was also dry. Now I'm scared to death. I've raised her since she was 4 weeks old and she is my protector. I can't imagine my life without her in it. She gives me such joy especially on days when everything else is going wrong.

I can only hope that the stuff in stores now is ok...

This is so frightening. I am switching my cats food to what Griff recommended today. We thought we were in the clear because all we feed her is dry cat food.

This is scary for so many people. Carol if you see this you can feed your cat, boiled hamburger, chicken and tuna(just check for bones) I have a friend considering it until this problem is sorted out.

Very sad. What's scary is the potential to contaminate the human food supply.

I feel so bad for all those people that fed the food to their animals before it was caught. Great article.
