If I am flipping through the channels looking for a movie to watch, I am looking for an actor who I know is going to give a good performance. If I see a movie with Robert De Niro or Clint Eastwood or Dustin Hoffman or Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino, chances are that I am going to stop and watch. But the problem with that list is that all of the actors are over 60. Now, there is no shortage of tremendous actors, but who are the ones most likely to replace the five graybeards on the must-watch list?

Here is my top 10 list of favorite actors under the age of 50.

10. Nicolas Cage, 43: It seems like he's been around forever and should be over 50, but he's not even close to the cutoff age. The nephew of famous director Francis Ford Coppola, Cage may have gotten his start due to nepotism, but he's been around this long because of some fantastic performances. Among his many credits are Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas and The Weather Man. He won an Oscar for his role as Ben Sanderson, the alcoholic screenwriter who drinks himself to death in Leaving Las Vegas.

9. Matt Damon, 36: The youngest actor on this list, Damon made his debut in Mystic Pizza, the first breakout role for Julia Roberts. Of course, he made a name for himself, along with buddy Ben Affleck, in 1997's Good Will Hunting, which they took home the Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay. Damon makes the list and Affleck doesn't because even though I find both of them likeable, I believe Damon is a better actor with more range. Damon followed that up with his role in Saving Private Ryan. He's also known for Rounders and the Bourne series.

8. George Clooney, 45: A co-star of Damon in the Ocean's Eleven re-make, Clooney worked his way to the big screen after stints in television shows like "Facts of Life", "Roseanne" and "ER". He has the fewest movie credits of anyone on the list, but I think he just has big-time star quality. That appeal helps me forget his role in The Perfect Storm in which he refers to Mark Wahlberg, just 10 years his junior, as "son". I prefer to think of him as Danny Ocean or for his roles in O Brother, Where Art Thou and Good Night, and Good Luck.

Tom Cruise I will pass on,don't care for him at all, but the others o.k.. I love the quirkiness and different appeal of Johnny Depp. He chooses such a variety of vehicles for his acting. Fun article.

My girlfriend says I act 20 most of the time! Have always thought Clooney was a good actor, but most of his movies don't do great at the box office. Never knew Matt Damon was in Mystic Pizza, have to watch for that next time I see it.

Thanks for your reply Michael! This is the first time I've heard of age-related shenanigans applied to a Caucasian. But I believe Clooney's a bit too famous (and son of a famous person, to boot) to pull it off. Hope you enjoy being 20 again.

Good list Brian, but if George Clooney is 45 I'm 20 again. He's the El Duque of Hollywood.

You know, I considered Keanu Reeves. Yes, he can't act to save his life but his skill at picking good movies should be acknowledged. I thought he was good in both River's Edge and Parenthood and he's been in a bunch of successful movies. I erred in not including him in the honorable mention section at the end of my piece.

Ok, what about Patrick Swayze?? I know you left him off the list because he is over 50. Also Keanu Reeves (just kidding) I LOVE John Cusack (specially in all the 80's flics: Better of Dead) Phillip S. Hoffman (Boogie Nights), George (all movies), Kevin (all movies), Johnny Depp (all movies) & Russell (Gladiator). Not a fan of Tom anymore. Yet he was good in the movies you mentioned. I really liked the Marty Scorese film "The Departed", I really liked Matt in it.

How old is Tom Hanks? We ususally enjoy him.

Matt Damon was so God awful in The Incredible Mr. Ripley, that I am still pissed off that I wasted $4 renting that dog. Norton is great, and I think Pitt is underrated. One could make a case for Tobey McGuire and Don Cheadle is pretty damn good these days. Cage was tremendous in Leaving Las Vegas, and Raising Arizona is an all time great one. Also, some nice sex and fight scenes in Valley Girls, not to mention one of the better new wave sound tracks, if that is your bag. I would switch Depp and Crowe for # 1 and #2. Love them both, though.

I would suggest that Born of the Fourth of July, The Firm and Interview with the Vampire were not roles where Cruise's looks played much of a part in the movie's success. Also, I was not looking to eliminate Tom Hanks by choosing under 50, but at the same time I was pleased that it worked out that way since, like you said, there would be no debate that he would be #1. I think people can certainly make solid arguements that Crowe does not derserve to be atop the list and I think that's good. What fun is a list that everyone agrees with? As for Leonardo, I did see This Boy's Life but I don't think that was any better than Tobey Maguire in The Cider House Rules. I think Leo has a lot of potential, but I just think others have done more substantial stuff. I thought for sure that George Clooney would be my most controversial pick but so far three people have chimed in with no complaints, so I guess that pick must be okay. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Don't care much for Nicholas Cage, his work never rang too true to me & I've never seen Tom Cruise play anything but a pretty boy...yet his movies are undeniably entertaining. Unlike Alex I think Matt Damon is very talented but I also agree you must make room for Leo. I also like Norton, Pitt (who has had roles where his looks don't matter) & Robbins. Of course your choice of an arbitrary number like "under 50" cuts Tom Hanks off at the knees since he is 50 exactly & would have to be #1 on the list otherwise!

Matt Damon is picking up buzz and getting better with each project. Almost feels like you should expand the list beyond 10 huh? Crowe and Cruise would be interchangeable with others you almost used. Fun article.

I agree with 8 of them. I can't stand to look at Tom Cruise anymore, so knock him off of the list. I think Matt Damon is terribly overrated. As much as I don't care for the Save the Planet crap from Leonrado DiCaprio, he is good. Watch him in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" or "This Boy's Life" to see his range. I could fill out the top ten with Ed Norton, Brad Pitt, or Mark Wahlberg. Good article though.
