President Bush withdrew the nomination of St. Louis businessman Sam Fox for the ambassadorship to Belgium minutes before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was to have voted on his nomination. The nomination was withdrawn when it became obvious that Fox would not be confirmed due to his contribution of $50,000 to the so-called "Swift Boat Veterans For Truth".

John Kerry had enough problems with his own propensity to trip over his tongue such as when he said "I voted for that.... before I voted against it" and other almost Bush-like blunders, but he did not deserve to have his military record and reputation smeared in such a way.

The GOP black ops squad had to stretch a bit from their usual "the Democratic Presidential candidate has no military experience" type of attack with Kerry's life being on the line in Viet Nam while Bush was busy guarding the Texas gulf coast from attack by the Viet Cong. When his commanders knew where he was, that is.

Ambassadorships are primarily political appointments that don't mean much, but in the Bush administration, every appointment is political as Alberto Gonzales is proving more every day. Bud Cummins, one of the Republican U.S. Attorneys purged because he wasn't sufficiently partisan in his investigations is continuing to speak out about threats made by administration officials and lies told in their testimony before Congress.

Bush administration officials keep changing their story on Cummins' firing, first admitting he was replaced to make room for one of Karl Rove's cronies, then Kyle Sampson testifying that it was performance related.

The right wing mantra that all U.S. Attorneys serve at the discretion of the President and besides the Anti-Christ (according to the GOP) Bill Clinton fired all 93 U.S. Attorneys upon taking office in 1993 is a typical Fox News lie or half-truth.

Takeaways
  • "What goes around comes around" like the old saying goes
  • Clinton's firing of U.S. Attorneys was the same thing Reagan and Bush 41 did
  • It has been customary for years for an incoming Prez to appoint his own people
