Romeo and Juliet are one of the most famous couples in both literature and history, so dressing up as them for Halloween is a great idea. Like other Shakespearean characters, Romeo and Juliet costumes will require relatively few props and simple clothing to put the most basic of outfits together. On the other hand, if you have more time and energy to put into the costumes you can create very authentic looking period pieces.

If you are looking for fun and unique Halloween costumes for you and a partner, here are some ideas to help you put together your own version of Romeo and Juliet.

Juliet

I recommend going with a medieval style gown since they are easier to create on your own or to find a finished dress that resembles something from the period. A basic Juliet costume requires a long fitted dress, in a bright color of your choice. To keep with a medieval look, the gown will need to be to the floor with sleeves all the way to the wrist. Try to find a dress made with rich looking fabric, the simpler the better since Juliet was young.

A capelet around the shoulders can be added and flat ballet slippers in the color of your choice for your feet. Other additions to the hair, wrists, or neck can be made, but I recommend keeping any modifications to the outfit as simple as possible. Hair can be worn loose down the back or loosely braided, ribbons can be added to the braid and to tie off.

Romeo

For the part of Romeo, dressing in period pieces is a little more complicated because not many males are willing to wear tights and a cod piece. Luckily, it is possible to create a believable Romeo costume without the tights. Instead try on some fitted pants, that define your legs, in black or dark blue. A loose white shirt with a cut away cape worn over it finishes the basic outfit.

A simple cut away cape can be easily made if a finished piece cannot be found. A cut away cape is not the traditional looking cape that you are used to seeing characters wear over their shoulders and tied at the neck. Instead, they resemble short ponchos or tunics with a wide neck and are made from brightly colored fabric. Simple black shoes or boots for the feet and a flatcap finish of the costume.
