What many students don't realize is that summer vacation is the perfect time to shine. It is a terrific opportunity to build a resume, participate in something they have never done before, broaden their horizons by traveling, and demonstrate to potential colleges and / or employers that they are "go-getters."
Doing something - and I don't mean just going to the beach - over the summer can have a very positive effect on financial aid and scholarships. This is true for both potential and current college students. It doesn't matter if you are a freshman in high school or a freshman in college; doing something productive with your summer will make you shine, and certainly stand out in a crowd. This means that your resume or application will be more likely noticed by whatever entity is reviewing it.
"But summer vacations are supposed to be fun!" you might say. There is no reason that you can't have fun while doing something productive during the summer. There are so many different activities to choose from.
Become an Intern
Would you like to work at a radio station? Perhaps you want to get involved in politics. Maybe you even want to someday have a job in television. The summer is the perfect time to find out whether or not your "dream job" is something you would seriously like to do. Be aware, however, that internships usually don't pay. You can find out about internships by contacting companies directly that you would like to intern for. You can even get information about local internships through the Internet, newspaper and even through your school.
