One of the first things one needs to know about writing.com is that they have their own currency. They are called "gift points". Ten thousand gift points equal one dollar. These gift points are very, very important on this website. Gift points are what you receive for rating and reviewing articles, and one receives them for doing many things on the site. These gift points can also be easily passed along from one registered member to another. Shortly after I joined the site, another member anonymously sent me a 3 month upgraded membership that he/she probably paid for with gift points. Gift points can also be used to buy things in the site store, anything from writing tools such as pens and notebooks, to T-shirts and hats. Even for logging on a person is given fifty gift points (only once daily though). There is a link to a section that keeps track of the current total gift points and all gift points given and received.
