Create an Educational Bedroom for Children
Keep Knowledge Flowing All Year Long

I was recently a substitute teacher's aide for a kindergarten class and was in awe at the aesthetics of the room. Colorful posters and learning tools displayed logically and strategically at eye levels. This is what you'd expect from a children's classroom but, I was somewhat upset with myself about my lack of decorating this way in the children's bedroom. Our children's bedroom has all the regulars: toys, books, colorful containers, puzzles etc. What we were lacking were the educational posters on the walls of the bedroom, that reinforced learned material and new concepts still developing. The miniature work stations and learning centers were also absent. I felt like I some how cheated my children out of this visual stimulation. I had deprived them of a subconscious osmosis of sorts. I couldn't figure out what had taken me so long to get to this realization.
While visiting my local educational store I ran into a mother who had 3 children under the age of 4 and she expressed the same sentiment. It was something that just hit her and she too couldn't understand why she hadn't thought of doing this earlier. She taught them educational skills while home but, she hadn't taken the next step toward creating a visual learning environment. At that point I figured this was not an isolated problem but one that other parents undoubtedly could use some help with.
Here are a few things to help you create an educatioanl environment in your children's bedroom. Enlist the children where appropriate. Have fun and stay balanced.
Brainstorm for ideas. Decide if you will be decorating the whole room, a section of the room or a particular wall. What is the size of your budget? You can make a children's bedroom more educational with very little money. Will you work within themes such as the school subjects or will you go for an area of interest to them and focus on the educational aspect of that?
