Facebook Poll May Reflect Public Sentiment
US Government Health Care Reform Heavily DebatedWith the US economy mired in crippling recession and soaring unemployment, the debate over proposed health care reform exacerbates an already fiery mix of problems on US President Barack Obama's agenda.
With Americans reared in a "have it your way" culture, perceived limitations that come with a regimented health care system undermine any sense of personal choice. The unanswered questions in the current health care proposal invoke simmering debate on the manner of its implementation.
Social Media Sites Join The Debate
In response to growing concerns over the health care debate, social media portals such as Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook resound with the clamor of citizens voicing discussions on what will befall the ailing US health care system. This very moment, social media giant Facebook is host to virulent polls addressing the health care reform issue, and the results lend some idea to what people are thinking.
A Facebook questionnaire entitled "The Universal Healthcare Poll" poses the following question: "Are you in favor of a Government run healthcare system?"
As of this writing, the exact results of this poll are as follows:
- Yes: (20.6%) 50,239 votes in favor of government health care.
- No: (76.0%) 185,160 votes opposed to government health care.
- Maybe: (3.3%) 8137 votes for those undecided on government health care.
Other polls in Facebook circulate asking the same question, with some showing similar results. While traditional media stalwarts such as ABC News share their reports reflecting a similar outlook, the health care debate steams onward to an indefinite future.

Let Facebook run a poll asking "Are you in favor of a Government run healthcare system, specifically Medicare?" How about "Are you in favor of a Government run healthcare system, specifically the Veterans Administration?" Then ask a question "Do you think all American citizens, young, middle age, elderly, veterans, civilians, should be treated equally by our government?" I am sure the answers will demonstrate remarkable hypocrisy.
A CBS News poll found that most Americans would be willing to pay higher taxes so everyone could have health insurance and that they said the government could do a better job of holding down health-care costs than the private sector.
