Dressing as a Greek Goddess for Halloween is both a fun and creative idea. The basic Greek Goddess costume calls for a very simple piece and requires only a few props to identify your character, plus it won't end up taking a lot of time and money to pull together. Even better, there are several Greek Goddesses to choose from, so you can be the beautiful Aphrodite or the hunter Artemis.

Of the twelve Olympian Gods, six of them were female, each with their own gifts and talents. To identify each of the goddesses attributes are assigned to each depending on the things they protected, you will use props to make yourself identifiable. Otherwise the basic costume for all the Greek Goddesses is the same, a chiton.

The chiton was the most common piece of clothing worn by the Ancient Greeks, and they depicted their Gods and Goddesses in the same type of clothing. A chiton is basically a long tunic that is attached with ties at the shoulders, for females the chiton can be worn with sleeves or sleeveless. You can make your own by sewing up the sides of two pieces of rectangular fabric, front and back, and then adding a tie to the top for the left shoulder and several more ties down the arms. A belt is added to the waist and sandals worn on the feet.

Once you have the basic outfit down it is time to decide which Greek Goddess you want to be for Halloween. Here are the six Greek Goddesses and the props that will bring your outfit together.

Hera- Queen of the Gods and Goddess of Marriage

Even though she was the wife of Zeus and therefore served as Queen of the Gods, Hera's main role was Goddess of marriage. Known for her many jealousies, I think it is safe to say Hera isn't the best choice for protecting marriage. Hera is recognized by the diadem, or simple crown, and veil she wears. You can also use a pomegranate as a prop, since it was a symbol of Hera, or add a peacock feather to your costume.

Aphrodite- the Goddess of Love and Beauty
