Gambling Occurred at Louisiana Cock Fights

A mile-long caravan of police cruisers pulled into a cock fight in Northern Louisiana. The target was not the cock fighting itself, but the illegal gambling that was taking place at the event. Louisiana
Cock Fighting Arena Raided for Illegal Gambling
is the last State in the US where cock fighting is a legal enterprise, after the blood sport was outlawed in New Mexico on March 12.

A small army of law enforcement officers mustered in preparation for the late night raid on the cock fighting arena. The army consisted of 65 state troopers, 20 sheriff's deputies plus detectives. The line of marked and unmarked police cars stretched on for more than a mile as the authorities made their way to the cock fighting arena, a few miles to the South of Logansport, Louisiana, just before 11:00 PM on Saturday night.

The excessive show of force was necessary, stated law enforcement spokesmen, because the authorities did not know what they could potentially encounter as they raided the cock fighting arena. The cock fights can number in the hundreds on the weekend, and the crowd could have potentially become volatile when confronted by authorities. Although police met no resistance from the 100 or so patrons at the arena, authorities wanted to have an adequate force to handle the worst possible scenario.

The cock fight itself was not the target of the raid. Cock fighting is a legal sport in the State of Louisiana. In fact, Louisiana is the only state where the blood sport is still legal, following a law banning cock fights that was passed in New Mexico on March 12. Although popular in other parts of the world, cock fighting is considered cruel and inhumane by many in the United States. Although cock fighting is legal in Louisiana, gambling on the event is not, and it was the illegal gambling that was the target of Saturday night's raid.

"But gambling as a business is illegal, and that's the basis of what is happening here," DeSoto-Sabine District Attorney Don Burkett said.

I think the cruelty to animals needs to be defined more clearly .As i see it you cant perform cruelty to a animal by letting it do what it will do on its own naturaly . I see a need for regulation of it but not banning it or consider it cruelty. Funny how those pushing for banning or falling to pressure of animal activist with no idea or of what they are talking about. those politicians that support the banning will support horse racing where a guy sits on horse and force it to run around a track for entertainment sport and gaming. But that is not considered cruelty. There is little diffrence in what they do and cock fighters do as time in raising, breeding and caring for a winner in either sport.

Cock Fighting ain't a crime it's striat up natural . Most people that don't fight roosters and don't believe in the sport think we should let our chickens run free. Most don't know that the game chickens have it in thier instinct to fight each other and fight each other until they are all dead. We put weapons on them to make the fight end faster.some bet on fights for the same reason some bet on horse racing and wrestling.

I have been fighting roosters fo 20 years and it is a family activity. Just because more people think it should be out-lawed doesn't make it right. I don't tell people how to live their lives or how to raise their animals, neither should they tell me. I thought America was the home of the free not communism. So quit pushing your views off on other people YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. Sincerely, A TRUE COCKER NEW MEXICO

Sorry Danny, but I try to stay away from places that are likely to land me in jail. Now if you ever want to pack up your rooster and head down to Mexico or the Philippines or somewhere else that allows cock fighting, then I'll certainly go watch.
