Nearly everyday, somewhere in print or on broadcast media can be found some political pundit railing against the US and our society for our lack of cultural diversity. To hear it told, we are an insular and closed society in mind, spirit and the body politic. Of all the things the "Hate America" cro
wd can argue, this seems an especially odd accusation. I mean, we are far from perfect, but are we a closed society? Or is there a method to their madness?

I would first like to know exactly who among us hates us, and why do they hate their own nation?

I think we can pretty much rule out Conservatives on this one. Why? Because the very definition of conservatism is a maintaining of the status quo. That means conservatism favors keeping things basically the way they are, therefore it isn't them hollerin' for change.

That leaves only the general category of Liberal left to fill the void. Which then begs the question, "Why are they doing this? Do they really 'hate' America." I sure hope not. But then I think they hate what we are. Americans are capitalists. We're all about the acquiring, holding and expanding of our wealth. We can consume with the best of 'em. Save a little, spend a lot. I mean can one ever really have too many flat screen high definition televisions? And considering Hollywood is leading the charge in some of this, Capitalism cannot be the real issue. I mean, is Rosie working for free? Susan Sarandon? Martin Sheen?

So, if Capitalism isn't the issue, what is it? Could there really be something to this diversity stuff? Are we as narrow minded and unenlightened as some try to portray? Is this an homogeneous society? Are we closed to other thoughts and cultures? To answer that question all one needs to do is pick up a phone book and peruse the 1000's of surnames found there. Our nations diversity allows us to sample the foods, music, religion and cultures of the entire planet. Considering how diverse we are already, as we are the acknowledged melting pot of the world, what are these people talking about?

OK Mr. McCarthy..you can relax, the commies aren't coming to get you...but on the other hand, a socially just world is the ultimate destiny of humanity..and you say look at Europe..you mean where universal health care is the norm? Where vast sums aren't spent to support a military industrial complex? Where great strides are being taken to find good alternative energy sources to stave off global warming, while our president denies it at the behest of the oil industry? Should I go on?
