Not all of us are naturals at personal finance. It's a struggle for me to keep a checkbook balanced. For some, a bank statement makes little sense. Others can't seem to get the knack of saving money. Most people think the idea of personal finance is ludicrous considering all their money is going for bills anyway.

Personal finance goes beyond what you're making and what you can save. It's about taking care of those bills and keeping your totals organized to avoid bouncing checks or being referred to credit collection agencies. More than that, it's about your own personal sense of control and well being. When you know where your hard earned money is going, you're better able to keep your stress levels down.

If you're in a financial hurricane and can't seem to figure out which end is up when it comes to your money, try some of these steps to get yourself back on track.

1. Ask for help at your financial institution - One of the main causes of losing financial control is not keeping a balanced checkbook. Many people delay recording their transactions. When transactions become forgotten, a personal ledger can become a mess. If you're not sure whether you've recorded everything, or are at a loss for how to begin balancing your books, see if your bank or credit union offers checkbook balancing services. Many do, some for free as a complimentary service to their members. Because they have all your past transactions in their database, you won't have to hunt around for receipts or rack your brain trying to remember everything from the past month. Plus, they can offer you tools and tips for future financial organization.

Takeaways
  • Out-of-control finances can be stressful and cause overdrafts.
  • Many banks offer services to help get your finances organized.
  • Rely on cash rather than debit cards for small purchases.
