The first album put together members from three very successful bands, David Crosby (The Byrds), Graham Nash (The Hollies), and Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). Mama Cass arranged for the three men to meet and begin their magical journey. Cass knew once they sat down to sing and play together it would be like heaven, the men clicked, and the rest is history. Never is that magic and magnificence more apparent than on their stunning debut. I have heard this album on CD and 180-gram vinyl, but never have I listened to it in such clear and resounding definition as this. This recording never grows old, it sounds better ever time I hear it and honestly, there is not a bad track on it. “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” has to be one of the greatest songs ever recorded. This trio took folk-rock to heights that were so exhilarating that they jumpstarted one of its largest growth spurts since its inception. When does “Wooden Ships” or “Long Time Gone” ever sound tired or old? It never does to me and now it has a renewed life. The sparks that were flying when it was first committed to tape in the studio are reignited and as real and prolific today as when it defined a new generation. This music brings you right there when it all happened. They made some incredible music for a debut album.
